Achilles Tendon Pain: Assessment and Rehabilitation

Learn about Achilles tendon pain and how a clinician-guided rehabilitation plan may help restore activity tolerance.

Achilles tendon pain can occur after changes in running, jumping, walking or other loading. Other conditions can produce similar symptoms, so assessment is important—especially when pain begins suddenly.

Understand the symptoms

Pain, tenderness or stiffness around the back of the heel can have several causes. A sudden pop, rapid swelling or inability to push off may indicate a more serious injury and needs urgent assessment.

Progressive loading

For some tendon conditions, a structured strengthening program and sensible load management are important parts of rehabilitation. Exercise selection and progression should reflect the diagnosis and response to activity.

Returning to activity

A graded plan considers work, sport, footwear, training volume and recovery. Your clinician can help set realistic steps and identify when further investigation or medical review is needed.
