GYM PROGRAM – KINETIC LINK TRAINING

What is Kinetic Link Training (KLT)?

KLT in the clinic is defined by functional movement training. Functional movement training is using the compound of the whole body with a focus on movement which relies on internal stability which pretty much mimics or supports activities of daily living and sporting activities. They involve multiple muscles groups together to carry out a function just like in everyday life – there can be trunk rotation with the use of upper limbs crossing the midline of the body.

The whole point of KLT is to improve the ability to perform daily tasks or sports specific activities with ease, efficacy, strength and control. A surfer requires a different set of functional training compared to a golfer and these training improve their adaptation in both the stabilising muscles and power-producing muscles.

Therefore, the physiotherapist in the clinic would be able to assess your situation and provide you with the set of kinetic link training that is specific for you which improves your globally rather than focus on traditional exercises.

How is KLT different from traditional exercises?

Functional Training Traditional exercises
Compound whole-body exercises with a focus on movement Commonly isolation of the individual muscles
Internal stability – no seats/benches External supports – using seats/benches
Mimics or support daily living or sports activities Rarely mimics daily living or sports activities
Multiple planes of movement Only one plane of movement – which is not how we move
Enriches balance and proprioception Rarely requires balance or proprioception

The workouts that athletes are doing are more functional and catered to their needs – it makes them adaptable and more stable when they are out in the field and playing. We require functional movement throughout daily life so why not be stable and adaptable in your daily life.

How does it help you?

KLT uses a systemic approach to biomechanically balanced resistance training – focusing on movements rather than muscles. This is because our body knows movement rather than muscles.

Many natural movements are full-body motions which require co-ordination and inter-linked muscles working together to carry out a function. They follow a pattern of sequential movement and concurrently activated muscles which helps with improvement in biomechanical efficiency, stability and control, force generation or speed.

To top it all off its fun! Repetitions and repetitions of the same exercises every week with the same type of weight which can get boring and it stops motivating you to go to the gym. With KLT, you will be challenged in the strength of your body movement, your balance and proprioception and it will be challenging but you will feel the difference if you follow the program with the physiotherapist/Exercise Physilogist.
