A pre-employment assessment would clear both the employers and employees in transitioning them into their new job and reassures you to ensure that the employee is not prone to injuries and the employee would be able to carry out duties without putting himself at risk either.
What is a pre-employment assessment?
A pre-employment assessment is a set of functional assessment or Functional Capacity Evaluations (FCEs) which provides information about an employees strength, flexibility and cardiovascular fitness. This information could help with determining if they would be able to carry out the demands that the job entails and also they can keep themselves safe and the other around them safe minimising work injuries. Manual handling techniques are discussed and provided leading to better understanding when starting the job.
Why pre-employment assessment is necessary?
Research has shown that pre-employment assessment has significantly reduced the risk of sustaining an injury, absence rate due to the injury and medical cost from the injury.
- Those who have not completed pre-employment are 2 x more likely to injure their knees, back and shoulders
- And cost 4 x more due to injury claims
What does it involve?
The different job and company require different skills and assessments to be done to ensure that they will be a good fit. They can include but not limit to:
- Strength – upper limbs, lower limbs, back and core strength
- Cardiovascular strength – 3 min step test
- Balance test
- Manual handling and strength/endurance through manual tasks – climbing a ladder, loading and unloading, squats, moving a distance with a certain amount of load
- Muscle flexibility and stability of the joint
